Parajanov Sergei (Paradzhanian Sarkis) (1924-1990)

1924-born in Tbilisi(Georgian)

1945-studied at VGIK (Moscow) one of the oldest and most highly respected film schools in Europe.
1957-moved to Kiev (Ukraine)
1962-created the magnificent  "Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors", which won countless international awards, including the British Academy Award.

1967-left for Armenia to film the documentary Hakob Hovnatanyan.
1968-created "Sayat Nova", his masterpiece.
1973-the Soviet government arrested Parajanov and sentenced him to five years in hard labor camps.
A large group of world-famous artists,filmmakers and activists protested and Parajanov was released,but only after having served four horrific years in the Soviet penal system.During and after prison Parajanov created extraordinary collages,drawings and numerous other art works, now frequently exhibited worldwide.  
1986-Parajanov made yet another multi-award winning film,Ashug-Karibi,based on a tale by Mikhail Lermontov.
1988-Sergei Parajanov museum was founded,which is one of the most popular museums in Yerevan.
1990-died in Yerevan (Armenia).

Sergei Parajanov is buried in Komitas park (Yerevan).
